Who we are
The Kunsthistorisches Institut in Florenz (Max-Planck-Institut) – the Institute of Art History in Florence (Max Planck Institute) – is one of the most respected institutions for research into Italian art anywhere in the world. The range of its research work and its collection of books and photography extend far beyond Tuscany to include Northern Italy.

The book and photograph collections are primarily focused on Renaissance art, art in the city of Siena and 19th and 20th century Italian art. The Institute in Florence's historical centre is in daily use as an international venue for research and meetings of art historians of all nationalities.

Until 1970, the Friends of the KHI had exclusive legal and financial responsibility for the Institute. The Friends was founded in 1898 and entered in the Berlin Register of Associations in 1903 under the name of Association for the Preservation of the Florence Institute of Art History. In 1970, the Institute was put under the control of the German Ministry of Education and Research and in January 2002 the Max Planck Society took over responsibility for the Florence Institute.

Florence was the most important European centre for the arts, sciences and humanities in the early Renaissance. From the outset therefore, the Friends has set itself the task of establishing and maintaining an institute to meet the requirements of researchers working on the art and culture of the city of Florence; the institute brings its work to the public through its own publications and academic events.

For almost a century, numerous private donors have helped the Institute to thrive and provided research resources and materials; they have acquired, fitted and staffed new buildings.

The Friends is still very keen to inform the general public about the work of the Institute and thereby to awaken interest in Italian art. The Friends also provides students and young researchers with financial support so they can make quick progress in their academic studies thanks to the Institute’s extensive collection of photos and books.
